PS5 Console

Is the PlayStation 5 a disappointment? (tip : Sony)

The reader gives his opinion on PlayStation 5 and explains why he thinks that it was not a disaster, but not as exciting as it should be.

Well, we’ve all seen it now, after months of waiting for the opening of PlayStation 5, and it was… a little hairy? I mean, everything was fine. A lot of games. But were some of them really that exciting? I don’t think so. It seemed impossible to make them on PlayStation 4? Not one.

It wasn’t a disaster, but after all the delay it was hard to worry. If the most memorable of the 26 games is Bugsnax, I think you have a problem (nothing against Bugsnax, his trailer did its job and I’m totally excited) So here are my top five reasons to shrug my shoulders on PlayStation 5 :

1. No request for a killer

I think most people know what a killer app is: The game is so good that you want to buy a console. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Gran Turismo 7, maybe if you’re a fan, but you can say it about anything. It’s not the same kind of attraction for ordinary people, and although Horizon Zero Dawn was popular, it’s not as if it ever was and the trailer couldn’t handle it.

Ratchet & Clank isn’t very big either, instead of entering this category with enough success to get sued, but not something most people are already obsessed with. Spider-Man wasn’t a complete game or the right sequel, and Demon Souls is a remake of a game most people have never heard of, and in any case it’s really a niche (there’s nothing wrong with that, but it means it’s definitely not a killer app).

All these games will probably be good, maybe even great, but they are not very exciting, according to what was shown on Thursday. Instead of the sequels in every game they could think of, Sony had to focus on less overwhelming games.

2. The graphs were not as good as those of Unreal Engine 5.

We all knew the games wouldn’t be as good as the Unreal Engine 5 demo, but I didn’t think they would go as far as they did. The strange thing is, none of them even tried. I don’t know which game is the most successful, look at these graphics, you’ll never get it on PlayStation 4! But whoever it is, it hasn’t achieved its goal.

Maybe it’s because the Horizon Forbidden West demo wasn’t cut very well, or maybe I should pay more attention to the machines, but just outside the door it didn’t even seem as if Sony was trying to emphasize the graphics, which I found incredible, and maybe a sign that they know they can’t beat Xbox at this point.

Instead, the focus seemed to be on their game catalog for the first part, which of course can not compete with Microsoft, but that brings me to the next point …

3. No new IP.

Of the nine games released by Sony, seven were a sequel or part of an existing franchise, which is very disappointing. Especially since the only two new IP’s are Housemarque’s Returnal, which apparently has nothing to do with Sony but releases them, and Destruction All Stars, which also comes out of the studio and seems to be a low-budget attempt to make more twisted cartoon metal. I’m not excited.

The Sackboy game looked playable on PlayStation 3, let alone 4, and of those nine games, the only one that’s sure to come out is Spider-Man: Miles Morales (which is not a complete game) and the Astro Bot room (which is actually not a game at all). Good Sony, another classic without decent games.

4. no new multiplayer

Another problem with so many sequels is that, as everyone has noticed in the past generation, most Sony games seem to follow a very obvious formula, which was set by Naughty Dog with Uncharted and The Last Of Us. Of these nine Sony games, seven are single-player action games for third parties. I mean, I’m as happy as anyone that Sony saved the game for one player, but you can have too many good things, you know?

The other three are Gran Turismo, Sackboy (which appears to be a four-player collaboration) and Destruction All Stars. It was a moment to show that Sony is broadening its horizons when it comes to opening competitions, but they have done almost the opposite, simply doubling what you have seen before.

5. Hidden warnings

All companies lie when they present games and consoles, and I am sure that half of what we have seen has been returned in advance and has never been near the PlayStation 5. I’m also sure it will be the same for the X-series of the Xbox in July. What is disturbing is how quickly the small print at Sony’s opening started to show that they were trying to throw sand in people’s eyes.

When you first saw the game Spider-Man, everything suggested it was Spider-Man 2. Then Sony’s marketing manager comes along and says no, it’s just a remastering with extra content. Then an arbitrary leak would have to correct them all, claiming that it is in fact some kind of budgetary fallout, but not really Spider-Man 2.

We still haven’t received a clear explanation from Sony or Insomniac about what it is, for the obvious reason that they want everyone to assume as long as possible that it is Spider-Man 2.

And then there’s Demon’s Souls, whose stunning graphics on this brand new super powerful console have proven to be an option if you want a decent frame rate. What other secrets are waiting to be revealed? Is Gran Turismo 7 a full game or a prologue? They have also not indicated that Astro Bot has nothing to do with the VR. I’ve even heard some people claim that the forbidden Western Horizon is an extension.

Will any of these games also be available on PlayStation 4? If they were Xbox series games, they would be, but is that an option for Sony or not?

Oh, yeah, and to tell you what the console looks like… It was normal, I guess. Not good, not bad. Just like this revelation in general.
